What’s dyngus day?
Dyngus Day, also known as Wet Monday is an age-old Polish tradition deeply intertwined with Slavic customs of saying farewell to winter and welcoming a reborn of spring. This festive occasion encouraged visitations to family & acquaintances with treats. A key ritual were the playful pouring of cold water on girls and tapping boys' feet with willow or palm branches. These traditions have symbolic meanings, representing fertility, spring cleansing from physical impurities and ailments, and the later on cleansing from sin.

Today, the holiday is not exclusively limited to Poland, but is celebrated around the world. The tradition has also been spread in the US by the Polish-American community. It includes a mix of traditional Polish customs and modern celebrations. Extravagant parades, huge festivals with delicious Polish cuisine, music and dance take center stage in major US cities every year after Easter. Of course, the best traditions are not forgotten, but unlike the original practices, everyone is doused with water without exception.
